Selecting a Site

Places to Look for Land To Garden

  • Parks
  • Communities of Faith
  • Schools
  • Community and Senior Centers
  • Vacant Lots
  • Flood Plain
  • Planning and Zoning Department

Negotiate with Landowner

  • Length of Lease (recommend no less than 5 years)
  • Who will provide water 7 security
  • What liability insurance will be required
  • Fee (and when due)
  • Resources provided by the landowner
  • Grounds for termination of lease
  • Primary contact for gardeners and landowners

Below is a list of land conservation organizations that either have ‘garden’ in their title or have indicated on the Land Trust Alliance 2010 census that ‘urban parks, gardens or open spaces’ were ‘very’ or ‘extremely important priorities.

The Land Trust Alliance has offered to help Community Gardening groups connect with these organizations by making introductions, helping to gauge organizational interest, facilitating land acquisition, and partnering in other ways.
