Buncombe 4-H Families and Friends:
Late Friday afternoon, we received final guidance from NC State University regarding summer 4-H programs. In response to the spread of COVID-19, and to help ensure the health and safety of the campus and broader community, NC State is canceling all university-related in-person academic, athletic and 4-H summer 2020 camps for K-12 students. This includes camps on NC State’s campus in Raleigh and at other locations.
While the message specifically mentions camps, it refers to all K-12 face-to-face events and activities conducted by NC State University employees and representatives. This impacts residential camps held at our three 4-H camps/centers, events held on the NC State campus, and all face-to-face programs conducted in the counties until NC State Extension lifts restrictions on Extension programming.
As a result, we will cancel the face-to-face versions of 4-H camps, 4-H Congress, Citizenship Focus and all other K-12 events and activities that are scheduled for summer 2020. This also includes all Buncombe County summer events that typically take place including our Local Foods Camp, Teen Camp, and Summer Fun workshops.
Although these events will not happen in the traditional face-to-face way, we are working on the possibility of having some of these events take place virtually. That information will be updated on our Facebook page and through email. Also, those who have paid deposits for summer 4-H camp will receive reimbursements soon.
Disappointment is an understatement. Our greatest concern is for your safety and that of our audiences state wide. Please take all appropriate measures to protect yourself and them from COVID-19 and encourage our youth, many of whom live with or frequently interact with elderly relatives and neighbors, to do the same.
